1. Tectonic plates most often cause earthquakes when they are sliding past one another. They get ‘caught’, pressure builds up and then they break free, causing an earthquake.
The San Andreas fault near San Francisco is probably the most famous fault in the US.
2. Bit of an awkward question: what does ‘beneficial for a volcano’ mean? A volcano can’t receive benefit because it’s not alive. Maybe they mean ‘beneficial for the people living around the volcano’? If so, then yes, a side vent can be beneficial, as it can ease the pressure and lead to less dramatic and damaging eruptions.
